Many bird species lack distinctive external sexual characteristics, making it impossible to directly determine the sex of an individual bird. In such cases, DNA analysis based on, for example, plucked feathers is a quick and easy way to determine the sex of the bird. Gendika has over 25 years of experience in sexing birds using DNA from feathers, eggshells, or blood.

At Gendika, we utilize the latest technologies and advanced techniques to determine sex, ensuring accurate and reliable results. This method allows Gendika to determine the sex of ALL bird species.

Advantages of sex determination using DNA from feathers

  • The DNA analysis can be easily performed on plucked feathers, making it possible to collect feather samples without a veterinarian.
  • Unlike endoscopic examination, the bird does not need to be transported or anesthetized, which significantly reduces stress for the bird.

Acceptable samples

  • For the analysis, 5 to 10 plucked feathers are required, preferably from the bird’s chest. Lost (molted) feathers are not suitable for analysis. When plucking the feathers, do not touch the shaft (the part of the feather that emerges from the skin) with your hands.
  • A dry eggshell that you can be certain is from the submitted bird.
  • You can also submit a blood sample; a single drop of blood (in a capillary tube) is sufficient for an accurate analysis.

Collection and Shipping of Samples for Sexing

The feathers of each bird can be collected in a sample bag or envelope. Place the bag or envelope along with a completed order form or a letter with your name and address and details of the bird(s) (species and ring number, if applicable) in a shipping envelope and send it to Gendika (P.O. Box 40, 9640 AA Veendam).

Results

  • Once the feather samples arrive at the Gendika laboratory, they are processed immediately. You will receive an email confirming receipt. The results are usually ready within 1 to 3 business days; once they are known, you will receive an email with the results the same day.
  • After you receive the email with the results, the paperwork will be prepared the same day. If desired, we will send the analysis report, invoice, and a certificate with the results to your address. You can also choose not to receive a certificate; In that case, you will receive a discount of 1 euro per animal and only the analysis report and invoice by email.
